G’day potato bake lovers, Greg here. Now today I’ve got a special recipe for you. Now this potato bake, my sister brings to Christmas dinners like every year and everyone always loves it.

Why You’ll Love This

And the beauty about it is that it’s so easy to make with hardly any ingredients. It’s the French onion soup potato bake.
Ingredients

- an onion
- three or four potatoes
- a packet of French onion soup
- 600 mils worth of thickened cream (about 20 fluid ounces)
- some shredded cheddar cheese
- some oil
- some pepper
Instructions

- Preheat the oven to 180 degrees Celsius, which is about 350 degrees fahrenheit.
- Cut the potatoes into fairly thin slices, just a couple of millimetres thick. You might want to cut the dead bits off.
- Cut the onion into thin slices.
- Grab a bowl, or maybe a jug might be even better. Add the French onion soup mix.
- Grab our cream, just pour that in, and mix it through.
- Grab a baking tray. Spray some oil into the bottom, just to stop the potato sticking.
- Start with our first layer of potatoes. Try and fill in all the gaps. Try and totally cover the bottom if you can. You can snap bits in half if you need to.
- Throw some onions, just a couple of rings of that.
- Pour over some of this liquid, so it covers the potatoes.
- Start again with the next layer of potatoes.
- Add the next layer of onions.
- For the final layer, pour all this cream, all the rest of this liquid over the potato bake here.
- Add a bit of pepper.
- Grab your cheese and sprinkle a layer of that over the top.
- Stick it on the middle shelf.
- Let that cook for about one hour, one hour and 10 minutes.
- After an hour come back, turn the oven off and just let it sit there for about another 10 months.
- Let it cool down for a bit.
- Cut this up.
Cooking Tips
If you’re really concerned, depending on the cheese, some cheese might burn a little easier. So you might want to add this about halfway during the cook. But I’m going to add it on now because I don’t mind if it’s a little bit crispy.
If you are concerned about that cheese burning, about halfway through, you can pull it out, then add the cheese or you can just put some aluminium foil on top and that should stop that from burning. Or getting crispy as I like to go.
Serving Suggestions
You’re going to need to ladle it into a bowl.
